Synopsis

*Grand prize winner of the VNSNY film competition and category winner of The Independent Film Festival at Tribeca Cinemas, New York.

A short film completed for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York's Living History Project, which paired local hospice patients with filmmakers committed to telling their stories.

Dorothy Kohl was born on September 21, 1917 in Manhattan, and raised in the Bronx. The oldest of four girls, she helped her father in his buttonhole-making shop on 180th and Hughes Avenue during the height of the Great Depression. Though Dorothy’s father only spoke Yiddish, and Dorothy only English, the two developed a tender and caring relationship while working together, a relationship that Dorothy still recalls today with great fondness. In “The Shopkeeper’s Daughter,” we hope to bring the memory of that relationship to life. Based on her interview, and narrated by hospice patient Dorothy herself, the film recreates a particular day in 1932 when Dorothy was left alone in the shop. Up until then, she had only operated the buttonhole machine under her father’s supervision. But, now, faced with an impatient customer and a fine silk blouse, Dorothy must overcome her fears, face adult responsibility, and make her father proud.
